How is Yoga practice different from other kinds of fitness?
Yoga is more than just physical postures. It allows us to connect the movement of the body and the fluctuations of the mind to the rhythm of our breath. Connecting the mind, body, and breath helps us to direct our attention inward. Through this process of inward attention, we learn to recognize our habitual thought patterns without labeling them, judging them, or trying to change them. We become more aware of our experiences from moment to moment. The awareness that we cultivate is what makes yoga a practice, rather than a task or a goal to be completed. The body will most likely become much more flexible by doing yoga, and so will the mind.
How many classes should I take?
Though Yoga is a daily life long practice, beginners are encouraged to take at least 2-3 classes a week to feel some benefit. Just like vitamins or exercise, consistency and integration into your lifestyle will allow you to reap more benefits. But don’t let time constraints or unrealistic goals be an obstacle – do what you can and don’t worry about it. After awhile your own desire to practice will increase naturally.
Do I need to be flexible?
You don’t need to be flexible to do yoga! Just like you don’t need to know Chinese to take Chinese lessons. Come with an open mind and you will find through time you body and also your mind will be more flexible.
However, should you have any current or past injuries please do inform the teacher before class, particularly those in the neck, spine, hip or knee areas. Ashtanga Yoga is a strong practice and as such, variations will need to be made for students with injuries.
What do I need to prepare or know before I attend class?
The practice will involve a lot of “push-ups”, bending forwards, backwards, twisting and for some jumping.
It is advisable:
· Clothing should be flexible and non-binding. No loose-fitting t-shirts or shorts.
· Practice on empty stomach. Refrain from eating 2-3 hours before class.
· Bring a small towel to assist in stretches. Expect to perspire!
· Don’t drink water in class. It reduces the warming of body necessary for perspiration & detoxification.
· Women not attend class when menstruating. Pregnant women only with teacher’s knowledge and supervision.
If you already have a yoga mat, please bring it along. Otherwise a mat will be provided for you.
